Only those insured persons who have voluntarily and successfully completed a mature driver motor vehicle crash prevention course approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles shall qualify for a three-year period after the completion of the course for the reduction in rates. No reduction in premiums shall be allowed for a self-instructed course or for any course that does not provide actual classroom instruction for a minimum number of hours as determined by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Notwithstanding the foregoing provisions of this section, a course sponsor that has been approved by the Department for the classroom delivery of a mature driver motor vehicle crash prevention course may also be approved to deliver that same substantive course through a secure computer-based medium provided via the Internet or other electronic means that have been approved by the Department, provided that the sponsor has acceptable security features designed to assure that the certificates issued pursuant to subsection E are issued to the same person who took the course and passed the examination related to the course. No <span class=\"dictionary\">person<\/span> assigned by the <span class=\"dictionary\">court<\/span> to attend a mature driver motor vehicle crash prevention course shall be eligible for such reduction in premium charges. <a id=\"paragraph-242624\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/38.2-2217\/#A\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"B\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">B.<\/span> Any schedule of <span class=\"dictionary\"><span class=\"dictionary\">rates<\/span><\/span>, <span class=\"dictionary\">rate<\/span> classifications or rating plans for motor vehicle <span class=\"dictionary\">insurance<\/span> as defined in &#xA7; <a class=\"law\" title=\"Grounds and procedure for cancellation of or refusal to renew motor vehicle insurance policies; review by Commissioner\" href=\"\/38.2-2212\/\">38.2-2212<\/a> filed with the <span class=\"dictionary\">Commission<\/span> may provide for an appropriate reduction in premium charges for a two-year period for those insured <span class=\"dictionary\">persons<\/span> who are fifty-four years of age or younger and who have satisfactorily completed a driver improvement clinic approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles, as set forth in Article 19 (&#xA7; <a class=\"law\" title=\"Regulations; appeals\" href=\"\/46.2-489\/\">46.2-489<\/a> et seq.) of Chapter 3 of Title 46.2. No <span class=\"dictionary\">person<\/span> assigned by the <span class=\"dictionary\">courts<\/span> or notified by the Department of Motor Vehicles to attend a driver improvement clinic shall be eligible for such reduction in premium charges. <a id=\"paragraph-242625\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/38.2-2217\/#B\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"C\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">C.<\/span> The <span class=\"dictionary\">Commission<\/span> and the Department of Motor Vehicles may promulgate rules and regulations which will assist them in carrying out the provisions of this section. <a id=\"paragraph-242626\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/38.2-2217\/#C\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"D\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">D.<\/span> All <span class=\"dictionary\">insurers<\/span> writing motor vehicle <span class=\"dictionary\">insurance<\/span> in Virginia as defined in &#xA7; <a class=\"law\" title=\"Grounds and procedure for cancellation of or refusal to renew motor vehicle insurance policies; review by Commissioner\" href=\"\/38.2-2212\/\">38.2-2212<\/a> shall allow an appropriate reduction in premium charges to all eligible <span class=\"dictionary\">persons<\/span> upon successfully completing an approved crash prevention course through actual classroom instruction subject to the provisions of subsection A. Such <span class=\"dictionary\">insurers<\/span> may allow an appropriate reduction in premium charges to all eligible <span class=\"dictionary\">persons<\/span> upon successfully completing an approved crash prevention course via the Internet or other electronic means subject to the provisions of subsection A. <a id=\"paragraph-242627\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/38.2-2217\/#D\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"E\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">E.<\/span> Upon successfully completing the approved course, the course&#8217;s sponsor shall <span class=\"dictionary\">issue<\/span> to each participant a certificate approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles which shall be <span class=\"dictionary\">evidence<\/span> of satisfactory completion of either a mature driver motor vehicle crash prevention course or a driver improvement clinic for the reduction in premium charges. Participants shall be required to provide satisfactory <span class=\"dictionary\">evidence<\/span> to the <span class=\"dictionary\">insurance<\/span> provider that the course or clinic was completed in accordance with this section. <a id=\"paragraph-242628\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/38.2-2217\/#E\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"F\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">F.<\/span> Each participant in a mature driver motor vehicle crash prevention course shall take an approved course every three years in <span class=\"dictionary\">order<\/span> to continue to be eligible for the reduction in premium charges. Each voluntary participant in a driver improvement clinic shall take an approved course every two years in <span class=\"dictionary\">order<\/span> to continue to be eligible for the reduction in premium charges, if any. <a id=\"paragraph-242629\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/38.2-2217\/#F\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"G\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">G.<\/span> Nothing in this section prevents an <span class=\"dictionary\">insurer<\/span> from offering appropriately reduced <span class=\"dictionary\"><span class=\"dictionary\">rates<\/span><\/span> based solely on age. <a id=\"paragraph-242630\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/38.2-2217\/#G\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>","plain_text":"                                 CODE OF VIRGINIA\n\nREDUCTION IN RATES FOR CERTAIN PERSONS WHO ATTEND MATURE DRIVER MOTOR VEHICLE\nCRASH PREVENTION COURSES AND DRIVER IMPROVEMENT CLINICS (\u00a7 38.2-2217)\n\nA. Any schedule of rates, rate classifications or rating plans for motor vehicle\ninsurance as defined in &#xA7; 38.2-2212 filed with the Commission shall provide\nfor an appropriate reduction in premium charges for those insured persons who\nare fifty-five years of age and older and who qualify as provided in this\nsubsection. Only those insured persons who have voluntarily and successfully\ncompleted a mature driver motor vehicle crash prevention course approved by the\nDepartment of Motor Vehicles shall qualify for a three-year period after the\ncompletion of the course for the reduction in rates. No reduction in premiums\nshall be allowed for a self-instructed course or for any course that does not\nprovide actual classroom instruction for a minimum number of hours as determined\nby the Department of Motor Vehicles. Notwithstanding the foregoing provisions of\nthis section, a course sponsor that has been approved by the Department for the\nclassroom delivery of a mature driver motor vehicle crash prevention course may\nalso be approved to deliver that same substantive course through a secure\ncomputer-based medium provided via the Internet or other electronic means that\nhave been approved by the Department, provided that the sponsor has acceptable\nsecurity features designed to assure that the certificates issued pursuant to\nsubsection E are issued to the same person who took the course and passed the\nexamination related to the course. No person assigned by the court to attend a\nmature driver motor vehicle crash prevention course shall be eligible for such\nreduction in premium charges.\n\nB. Any schedule of rates, rate classifications or rating plans for motor vehicle\ninsurance as defined in &#xA7; 38.2-2212 filed with the Commission may provide\nfor an appropriate reduction in premium charges for a two-year period for those\ninsured persons who are fifty-four years of age or younger and who have\nsatisfactorily completed a driver improvement clinic approved by the Department\nof Motor Vehicles, as set forth in Article 19 (&#xA7; 46.2-489 et seq.) of\nChapter 3 of Title 46.2. No person assigned by the courts or notified by the\nDepartment of Motor Vehicles to attend a driver improvement clinic shall be\neligible for such reduction in premium charges.\n\nC. The Commission and the Department of Motor Vehicles may promulgate rules and\nregulations which will assist them in carrying out the provisions of this\nsection.\n\nD. All insurers writing motor vehicle insurance in Virginia as defined in &#xA7;\n38.2-2212 shall allow an appropriate reduction in premium charges to all\neligible persons upon successfully completing an approved crash prevention\ncourse through actual classroom instruction subject to the provisions of\nsubsection A. Such insurers may allow an appropriate reduction in premium\ncharges to all eligible persons upon successfully completing an approved crash\nprevention course via the Internet or other electronic means subject to the\nprovisions of subsection A.\n\nE. Upon successfully completing the approved course, the course&#8217;s sponsor\nshall issue to each participant a certificate approved by the Department of\nMotor Vehicles which shall be evidence of satisfactory completion of either a\nmature driver motor vehicle crash prevention course or a driver improvement\nclinic for the reduction in premium charges. Participants shall be required to\nprovide satisfactory evidence to the insurance provider that the course or\nclinic was completed in accordance with this section.\n\nF. Each participant in a mature driver motor vehicle crash prevention course\nshall take an approved course every three years in order to continue to be\neligible for the reduction in premium charges. Each voluntary participant in a\ndriver improvement clinic shall take an approved course every two years in order\nto continue to be eligible for the reduction in premium charges, if any.\n\nG.
