However, no extension granted under this section shall exceed six years from the date of expiration shown on the individual&#8217;s driver&#8217;s license.\n\t\t\tFor the purposes of this subsection, &#8220;service in the armed services of the United States&#8221; includes active duty service with the regular Armed Forces of the United States or the National Guard or other reserve component.B\n\nNotwithstanding &#xA7; 46.2-330, the Commissioner may, for good cause shown, extend the validity period of a driver&#8217;s license issued by the Department pursuant to Chapter 3 (&#xA7; 46.2-300 et seq.), provided that the license holder requesting the extension (i) contacts the Department prior to expiration of his license, (ii) is temporarily absent from the Commonwealth at the time his driver&#8217;s license is due for renewal, (iii) provides the Commissioner with verifiable evidence documenting the need for an extension, (iv) provides the Commissioner with the earliest date of return, and (v) is not eligible to renew his license online. However, no extension granted under this section shall exceed six years from the date of expiration shown on the individual&#8217;s <span class=\"dictionary\">driver<\/span>&#8217;s license.\n\t\t\tFor the purposes of this subsection, &#8220;<span class=\"dictionary\">service in the armed services of the United States<\/span>&#8221; includes active duty service with the regular Armed Forces of the United States or the National Guard or other reserve component. <a id=\"paragraph-253034\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/46.2-221.2\/#A\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"B\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">B.<\/span> Notwithstanding &#xA7; <a class=\"law\" title=\"Expiration and renewal of licenses; examinations required\" href=\"\/46.2-330\/\">46.2-330<\/a>, the <span class=\"dictionary\">Commissioner<\/span> may, for good cause shown, extend the validity period of a <span class=\"dictionary\">driver<\/span>&#8217;s license issued by the <span class=\"dictionary\">Department<\/span> pursuant to Chapter 3 (&#xA7; <a class=\"law\" title=\"Driving without license prohibited; penalties\" href=\"\/46.2-300\/\">46.2-300<\/a> et seq.), provided that the license holder requesting the extension (i) contacts the <span class=\"dictionary\">Department<\/span> prior to expiration of his license, (ii) is temporarily absent from the Commonwealth at the time his <span class=\"dictionary\">driver<\/span>&#8217;s license is due for renewal, (iii) provides the <span class=\"dictionary\">Commissioner<\/span> with verifiable <span class=\"dictionary\">evidence<\/span> documenting the need for an extension, (iv) provides the <span class=\"dictionary\">Commissioner<\/span> with the earliest date of return, and (v) is not eligible to renew his license online. No extension granted under this subsection shall exceed two years from the date of expiration shown on the individual&#8217;s <span class=\"dictionary\">driver<\/span>&#8217;s license. <a id=\"paragraph-253035\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/46.2-221.2\/#B\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"C\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">C.<\/span> The <span class=\"dictionary\">Department<\/span> shall furnish to any person whose <span class=\"dictionary\">driver<\/span>&#8217;s license is extended under this section documentary or other proof that he is entitled to the benefits of this section when operating any <span class=\"dictionary\">motor vehicle<\/span>. <a id=\"paragraph-253036\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/46.2-221.2\/#C\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>","plain_text":"                                 CODE OF VIRGINIA\n\nEXTENSION OF EXPIRATION OF DRIVER&#8217;S LICENSES ISSUED TO CERTAIN PERSONS IN\nSERVICE TO THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT OR FOR GOOD CAUSE SHOWN (\u00a7 46.2-221.2)\n\nA. Notwithstanding &#xA7; 46.2-330, any driver&#8217;s license that is issued by\nthe Department under Chapter 3 (&#xA7; 46.2-300 et seq.) to (i) a person serving\noutside the Commonwealth in the armed services of the United States, (ii) a\nperson serving outside the Commonwealth as a member of the diplomatic service of\nthe United States appointed under the Foreign Service Act of 1946, (iii) a\ncivilian employee of the United States government or any agency or contractor\nthereof serving outside the United States on behalf of the United States\ngovernment, or (iv) a spouse or dependent accompanying any such member of the\narmed services or diplomatic service serving outside the Commonwealth or\ncivilian employee of the United States government or any agency or contractor\nthereof serving outside the United States on behalf of the United States\ngovernment shall be held not to have expired during the period of the\nlicensee&#8217;s service outside the Commonwealth in the armed services of the\nUnited States or as a member of the diplomatic service of the United States\nappointed under the Foreign Service Act of 1946 or as a civilian employee of the\nUnited States government or any agency or contractor thereof serving outside the\nUnited States on behalf of the United States government and 180 days thereafter.\nHowever, no extension granted under this section shall exceed six years from the\ndate of expiration shown on the individual&#8217;s driver&#8217;s license.\n\t\t\tFor the purposes of this subsection, &#8220;service in the armed services of\nthe United States&#8221; includes active duty service with the regular Armed\nForces of the United States or the National Guard or other reserve component.\n\nB.
