Traffic-control devices may be erected directing specified traffic to use a designated lane or designating those lanes to be used by traffic moving in a particular direction regardless of the center of the roadway and drivers of vehicles shall obey the directions of every such device;4\n\nThe Commissioner of Highways, or local authorities in their respective jurisdictions, may designate right lanes for slow-moving vehicles and the Virginia Department of Transportation shall post signs requiring trucks and combination vehicles to keep to the right on Interstate Highway System components with no more than two travel lanes in each direction where terrain is likely to slow the speed of such vehicles climbing hills and inclines to a speed that is less than the posted speed limit;5\n\nWherever a highway is marked with double traffic lines consisting of a solid line immediately adjacent to a broken line, no vehicle shall be driven to the left of such line if the solid line is on the right of the broken line, except (i) when turning left for the purpose of entering or leaving a public, private, or commercial road or entrance or (ii) in order to pass a pedestrian or a device moved by human power, including a bicycle, skateboard, or foot-scooter, provided such movement can be made safely. Traffic-control devices may be erected directing specified traffic to use a designated <span class=\"dictionary\">lane<\/span> or designating those <span class=\"dictionary\">lanes<\/span> to be used by traffic moving in a particular direction regardless of the center of the <span class=\"dictionary\">roadway<\/span> and <span class=\"dictionary\">drivers<\/span> of <span class=\"dictionary\">vehicles<\/span> shall obey the directions of every such device; <a id=\"paragraph-244948\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/46.2-804\/#3\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"4\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">4.<\/span> The <span class=\"dictionary\">Commissioner<\/span> of <span class=\"dictionary\"><span class=\"dictionary\">Highways<\/span><\/span>, or local authorities in their respective <span class=\"dictionary\">jurisdictions<\/span>, may designate right <span class=\"dictionary\">lanes<\/span> for slow-moving <span class=\"dictionary\">vehicles<\/span> and the Virginia <span class=\"dictionary\">Department<\/span> of Transportation shall post signs requiring <span class=\"dictionary\">trucks<\/span> and combination <span class=\"dictionary\">vehicles<\/span> to keep to the right on Interstate <span class=\"dictionary\">Highway<\/span> System components with no more than two travel <span class=\"dictionary\">lanes<\/span> in each direction where terrain is likely to slow the speed of such <span class=\"dictionary\">vehicles<\/span> climbing hills and inclines to a speed that is less than the posted speed limit; <a id=\"paragraph-244949\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/46.2-804\/#4\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"5\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">5.<\/span> Wherever a <span class=\"dictionary\">highway<\/span> is marked with double traffic lines consisting of a solid line immediately adjacent to a broken line, no <span class=\"dictionary\">vehicle<\/span> shall be driven to the left of such line if the solid line is on the right of the broken line, except (i) when turning left for the purpose of entering or leaving a public, private, or commercial road or entrance or (ii) in <span class=\"dictionary\">order<\/span> to pass a pedestrian or a device moved by human power, including a <span class=\"dictionary\">bicycle<\/span>, skateboard, or foot-scooter, provided such movement can be made safely. Where the middle <span class=\"dictionary\">lane<\/span> of a <span class=\"dictionary\">highway<\/span> is marked on both sides with a solid line immediately adjacent to a broken line, such middle <span class=\"dictionary\">lane<\/span> shall be considered a left-turn or holding <span class=\"dictionary\">lane<\/span> and it shall be lawful to drive to the left of such line if the solid line is on the right of the broken line for the purpose of turning left into any road or entrance, provided that the <span class=\"dictionary\">vehicle<\/span> may not travel in such <span class=\"dictionary\">lane<\/span> further than 150 feet; <a id=\"paragraph-244950\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/46.2-804\/#5\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"6\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">6.<\/span> Wherever a <span class=\"dictionary\">highway<\/span> is marked with double traffic lines consisting of two immediately adjacent solid yellow lines, no <span class=\"dictionary\">vehicle<\/span> shall be driven to the left of such lines, except (i) when turning left or (ii) in <span class=\"dictionary\">order<\/span> to pass a pedestrian or a device moved by human power, including a <span class=\"dictionary\">bicycle<\/span>, skateboard, or foot-scooter, provided such movement can be made safely; and <a id=\"paragraph-244951\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/46.2-804\/#6\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"7\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">7.<\/span> Whenever a <span class=\"dictionary\">highway<\/span> is marked with double traffic lines consisting of two immediately adjacent solid white lines, no <span class=\"dictionary\">vehicle<\/span> shall cross such lines.\n\t\t\tA violation of this section is punishable by a fine of $100. <a id=\"paragraph-244952\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/46.2-804\/#7\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>","plain_text":"                                 CODE OF VIRGINIA\n\nSPECIAL REGULATIONS APPLICABLE ON HIGHWAYS LANED FOR TRAFFIC; PENALTY (\u00a7\n46.2-804)\n\nFor the purposes of this section, &#8220;traffic lines&#8221; includes any\ntemporary traffic control devices used to emulate the lines and markings in\nsubdivisions 6 and 7.\n\t\tWhenever any roadway has been divided into clearly marked lanes for traffic,\ndrivers of vehicles shall obey the following:\n\n1. Any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time\nand place and under the conditions existing, shall be driven in the lane nearest\nthe right edge or right curb of the highway when such lane is available for\ntravel except when overtaking and passing another vehicle or in preparation for\na left turn or where right lanes are reserved for slow-moving traffic as\npermitted in this section;\n\n2. Except as otherwise provided in subdivision 5, on a highway which is divided\ninto three lanes, no vehicle shall be driven in the center lane except when\novertaking and passing another vehicle or in preparation for a left turn or\nunless such center lane is at the time allocated exclusively to traffic moving\nin the direction the vehicle is proceeding and is signed or marked to give\nnotice of such allocation.
