Such prisoner shall travel directly to, from or be in authorized attendance or employment at such place of business, educational or related community activity program.B\n\nThe Director is authorized to arrange for the temporary care of prisoners who are deemed capable of participation in the programs established herein in approved local or community correctional facilities. The hours of employment or attendance shall be arranged by the Director. In the event of a legally sanctioned strike at the prisoner&#8217;s place of employment, the prisoner in the work release program shall be withdrawn from the employment for the duration of the strike.C\n\nThe compensation for such employment shall be arranged by the Director and shall be the same as that of regular employees in similar occupations. Any wages earned shall be paid to the Director. The Director shall, in accordance with regulations promulgated by the Director, deduct from such wages, in the following order of priority, an amount to:1\n\nMeet the obligation of any judicial or administrative order to provide support and such funds shall be disbursed according to the terms of such order;2\n\nPay any fines, restitution or costs as ordered by the court;3\n\nPay travel and other such expenses made necessary by his work release employment or participation in an educational or rehabilitative program, including the sums specified in &#xA7; 53.1-150; and4\n\nDefray the prisoner&#8217;s keep.\n\t\t\t\tThe balance shall be credited to the prisoner&#8217;s account or sent to his family in an amount the prisoner so chooses.D\n\nAny prisoner who has been placed in any of the programs authorized herein shall, while outside the state correctional facility or approved local or community correctional facility to which he is assigned, be deemed to be in custody whether or not he is under the supervision of a correctional officer. The <span class=\"dictionary\">Director<\/span> shall, in accordance with regulations promulgated by the <span class=\"dictionary\">Director<\/span>, deduct from such wages, in the following <span class=\"dictionary\">order<\/span> of priority, an amount to: <a id=\"paragraph-277210\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/53.1-60\/#C\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"C1\" class=\"indent-1\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">1.<\/span> Meet the obligation of any judicial or administrative <span class=\"dictionary\">order<\/span> to provide support and such funds shall be disbursed according to the terms of such <span class=\"dictionary\">order<\/span>; <a id=\"paragraph-277211\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/53.1-60\/#C1\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"C2\" class=\"indent-1\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">2.<\/span> Pay any fines, <span class=\"dictionary\">restitution<\/span> or costs as ordered by the <span class=\"dictionary\">court<\/span>; <a id=\"paragraph-277212\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/53.1-60\/#C2\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"C3\" class=\"indent-1\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">3.<\/span> Pay travel and other such expenses made necessary by his work release employment or participation in an educational or rehabilitative program, including the sums specified in &#xA7; <a class=\"law\" title=\"Contributions by persons on parole, probation, and work release\" href=\"\/53.1-150\/\">53.1-150<\/a>; and <a id=\"paragraph-277213\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/53.1-60\/#C3\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"C4\" class=\"indent-1\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">4.<\/span> Defray the prisoner&#8217;s keep.\n\t\t\t\tThe balance shall be credited to the prisoner&#8217;s account or sent to his family in an amount the prisoner so chooses. <a id=\"paragraph-277214\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/53.1-60\/#C4\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"D\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">D.<\/span> Any prisoner who has been placed in any of the programs authorized herein shall, while outside the <span class=\"dictionary\">state correctional facility<\/span> or approved local or <span class=\"dictionary\">community correctional facility<\/span> to which he is assigned, be deemed to be in <span class=\"dictionary\">custody<\/span> whether or not he is under the supervision of a <span class=\"dictionary\">correctional officer<\/span>. If the prisoner, without proper authority or without just cause, leaves the area in which he has been directed to work or to attend educational or community activity programs, or the vehicle or route involved in his traveling to or from such place or program, he may be found guilty of escape as provided for in &#xA7; <a class=\"law\" title=\"Prisoner escaping from jail; how punished\" href=\"\/18.2-477\/\">18.2-477<\/a> as though he had left the state, local or <span class=\"dictionary\">community correctional facility<\/span> itself, or, if there are <span class=\"dictionary\">mitigating circumstances<\/span> or the culpability of the prisoner is minimal, he may be found guilty of a Class 2 <span class=\"dictionary\">misdemeanor<\/span>. <a id=\"paragraph-277215\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/53.1-60\/#D\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"E\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">E.<\/span> The <span class=\"dictionary\">Director<\/span> and any sheriff or other administrative head of any <span class=\"dictionary\">local correctional facility<\/span> are authorized to enter into agreements whereby persons committed to the <span class=\"dictionary\">Department<\/span>, whether such persons are housed in a state or <span class=\"dictionary\">local correctional facility<\/span>, and who meet the <span class=\"dictionary\">Department<\/span>&#8217;s standards for such release may participate in local work release programs or in educational or other rehabilitative programs operating pursuant to &#xA7; <a class=\"law\" title=\"Provision for release of prisoner from confinement for employment, educational or other rehabilitative programs; escape; penalty; disposition of earnings\" href=\"\/53.1-131\/\">53.1-131<\/a>. Any person so placed shall be governed by the rules and regulations applicable to local work release programs. <a id=\"paragraph-277216\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/53.1-60\/#E\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"F\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">F.<\/span> The provisions of &#xA7; <a class=\"law\" title=\"Provision for release of prisoner from confinement for employment, educational or other rehabilitative programs; escape; penalty; disposition of earnings\" href=\"\/53.1-131\/\">53.1-131<\/a> shall apply to any person convicted of a <span class=\"dictionary\">felony<\/span> but confined in jail pursuant to &#xA7; <a class=\"law\" title=\"Commitment of convicted persons to custody of Director\" href=\"\/53.1-20\/\">53.1-20<\/a> and participating in work, rehabilitation, or education programs. <a id=\"paragraph-277217\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/53.1-60\/#F\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>","plain_text":"                                 CODE OF VIRGINIA\n\nEXTENDING LIMITS OF CONFINEMENT OF STATE PRISONERS FOR WORK AND EDUCATIONAL\nPROGRAMS; DISPOSITION OF WAGES; SUPPORT OF CERTAIN DEPENDENTS; PENALTIES FOR\nVIOLATIONS (\u00a7 53.1-60)\n\nA. Such prisoner shall travel directly to, from or be in\nauthorized attendance or employment at such place of business, educational or\nrelated community activity program.\n\nB. The Director is authorized to arrange for the temporary care of prisoners who\nare deemed capable of participation in the programs established herein in\napproved local or community correctional facilities. The hours of employment or\nattendance shall be arranged by the Director. In the event of a legally\nsanctioned strike at the prisoner&#8217;s place of employment, the prisoner in\nthe work release program shall be withdrawn from the employment for the duration\nof the strike.\n\nC. The compensation for such employment shall be arranged by the Director and\nshall be the same as that of regular employees in similar occupations. Any wages\nearned shall be paid to the Director. The Director shall, in accordance with\nregulations promulgated by the Director, deduct from such wages, in the\nfollowing order of priority, an amount to:\n\n   1.
