Upon being registered with the Board as a pharmacy technician, the following tasks may be performed:1\n\nThe entry of prescription information and drug history into a data system or other record keeping system;2\n\nThe preparation of prescription labels or patient information;3\n\nThe removal of the drug to be dispensed from inventory;4\n\nThe counting, measuring, or compounding of the drug to be dispensed;5\n\nThe packaging and labeling of the drug to be dispensed and the repackaging thereof;6\n\nThe stocking or loading of automated dispensing devices or other devices used in the dispensing process;7\n\nThe acceptance of refill authorization of a prescription for a Schedule III through Schedule VI drug and clarification of quantity or refills for a prescription issued for a Schedule VI drug from a prescriber or his authorized agent, so long as there is no other change to the original prescription;8\n\nThe acceptance of an electronic transfer of a refill for a Schedule VI drug upon order of the pharmacist-in-charge or pharmacist on duty if the refill is not an on-hold prescription;9\n\nUnder the supervision of a pharmacist, meaning the supervising pharmacist is at the same physical location of the technician or pharmacy intern, and consistent with the requirements of &#xA7; 54.1-3303.1, administration of the following drugs and devices to persons three years of age or older as set forth in regulations of the Board: vaccines included on the Immunization Schedule published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and vaccines for COVID-19; and10\n\nThe performance of any other task restricted to pharmacy technicians by the Board&#8217;s regulations.B\n\nTo be registered as a pharmacy technician, a person shall submit:1\n\nAn application and fee specified in regulations of the Board;2\n\nEvidence that he has successfully completed a training program that is (i) an accredited training program, including an accredited training program operated through the Department of Education&#8217;s Career and Technical Education program or approved by the Board; (ii) recognized by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or the National Healthcareer Association; or (iii) operated through a federal agency or branch of the military; and3\n\nEvidence that he has successfully passed a national certification examination administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or the National Healthcareer Association.C\n\nThe Board shall promulgate regulations establishing requirements for:1\n\nIssuance of a registration as a pharmacy technician to a person who, prior to the effective date of such regulations, (i) successfully completed or was enrolled in a Board-approved pharmacy technician training program or (ii) passed a national certification examination required by the Board but did not complete a Board-approved pharmacy technician training program;2\n\nIssuance of a registration as a pharmacy technician to a person who (i) has previously practiced as a pharmacy technician in another U.S. jurisdiction and (ii) has passed a national certification examination required by the Board; and3\n\nEvidence of continued competency as a condition of renewal of a registration as a pharmacy technician.D\n\nThe Board shall waive the initial registration fee for a pharmacy technician applicant who works as a pharmacy technician exclusively in a free clinic pharmacy. A person registered pursuant to this subsection shall be issued a limited-use registration. A pharmacy technician with a limited-use registration shall not perform pharmacy technician tasks in any setting other than a free clinic pharmacy. The Board shall also waive renewal fees for such limited-use registrations. A pharmacy technician with a limited-use registration may convert to an unlimited registration by paying the current renewal fee.E\n\nAny person registered as a pharmacy technician prior to the effective date of regulations implementing the provisions of this section shall not be required to comply with the requirements of subsection B in order to maintain or renew registration as a pharmacy technician.F\n\nA pharmacy technician trainee enrolled in a training program for pharmacy technicians described in subdivision B 2 may engage in the acts set forth in subsection A for the purpose of obtaining practical experience required for completion of the training program, so long as such activities are directly monitored by a supervising pharmacist.G\n\nTo be registered as a pharmacy technician trainee, a person shall submit an application and a fee specified in regulations of the Board. Such registration shall only be valid while the person is enrolled in a pharmacy technician training program described in subsection B and actively progressing toward completion of such program. <a class=\"law\" title=\"Initiating of treatment with and dispensing and administering of controlled substances by pharmacists\" href=\"\/54.1-3303.1\/\">54.1-3303.1<\/a>, administration of the following drugs and devices to persons three years of age or older as set forth in regulations of the <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span>: vaccines included on the Immunization Schedule published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and vaccines for COVID-19; and <a id=\"paragraph-243788\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#A9\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"A10\" class=\"indent-1\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">10.<\/span> The performance of any other task restricted to <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technicians<\/span> by the <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span>&#8217;s regulations. <a id=\"paragraph-243789\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#A10\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"B\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">B.<\/span> To be registered as a <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician<\/span>, a person shall submit: <a id=\"paragraph-243790\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#B\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"B1\" class=\"indent-1\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">1.<\/span> An application and fee specified in regulations of the <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span>; <a id=\"paragraph-243791\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#B1\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"B2\" class=\"indent-1\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">2.<\/span> <span class=\"dictionary\">Evidence<\/span> that he has successfully completed a training program that is (i) an accredited training program, including an accredited training program operated through the Department of Education&#8217;s Career and Technical Education program or approved by the <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span>; (ii) recognized by the <span class=\"dictionary\">Pharmacy Technician<\/span> Certification <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span> or the National Healthcareer Association; or (iii) operated through a federal agency or branch of the military; and <a id=\"paragraph-243792\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#B2\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"B3\" class=\"indent-1\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">3.<\/span> <span class=\"dictionary\">Evidence<\/span> that he has successfully passed a national certification examination administered by the <span class=\"dictionary\">Pharmacy Technician<\/span> Certification <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span> or the National Healthcareer Association. <a id=\"paragraph-243793\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#B3\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"C\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">C.<\/span> The <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span> shall promulgate regulations establishing requirements for: <a id=\"paragraph-243794\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#C\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"C1\" class=\"indent-1\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">1.<\/span> Issuance of a registration as a <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician<\/span> to a person who, prior to the effective date of such regulations, (i) successfully completed or was enrolled in a <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span>-approved <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician<\/span> training program or (ii) passed a national certification examination required by the <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span> but did not complete a <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span>-approved <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician<\/span> training program; <a id=\"paragraph-243795\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#C1\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"C2\" class=\"indent-1\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">2.<\/span> Issuance of a registration as a <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician<\/span> to a person who (i) has previously practiced as a <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician<\/span> in another U.S. <span class=\"dictionary\">jurisdiction<\/span> and (ii) has passed a national certification examination required by the <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span>; and <a id=\"paragraph-243796\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#C2\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"C3\" class=\"indent-1\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">3.<\/span> <span class=\"dictionary\">Evidence<\/span> of continued competency as a condition of renewal of a registration as a <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician<\/span>. <a id=\"paragraph-243797\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#C3\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"D\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">D.<\/span> The <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span> shall <span class=\"dictionary\">waive<\/span> the initial registration fee for a <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician<\/span> applicant who works as a <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician<\/span> exclusively in a free clinic pharmacy. A person registered pursuant to this subsection shall be issued a limited-use registration. A <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician<\/span> with a limited-use registration shall not perform <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician<\/span> tasks in any setting other than a free clinic pharmacy. The <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span> shall also <span class=\"dictionary\">waive<\/span> renewal fees for such limited-use registrations. A <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician<\/span> with a limited-use registration may convert to an unlimited registration by paying the current renewal fee. <a id=\"paragraph-243798\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#D\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"E\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">E.<\/span> Any person registered as a <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician<\/span> prior to the effective date of regulations implementing the provisions of this section shall not be required to comply with the requirements of subsection B in <span class=\"dictionary\">order<\/span> to maintain or renew registration as a <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician<\/span>. <a id=\"paragraph-243799\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#E\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"F\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">F.<\/span> A <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician trainee<\/span> enrolled in a training program for <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technicians<\/span> described in subdivision B 2 may engage in the acts set forth in subsection A for the purpose of obtaining practical experience required for completion of the training program, so long as such activities are directly monitored by a supervising <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacist<\/span>. <a id=\"paragraph-243800\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#F\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"G\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">G.<\/span> To be registered as a <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technician trainee<\/span>, a person shall submit an application and a fee specified in regulations of the <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span>. Such registration shall only be valid while the person is enrolled in a pharmacy technician training program described in subsection B and actively progressing toward completion of such program. A registration card issued pursuant to this section shall be invalid and shall be returned to the <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span> if such person fails to enroll in a pharmacy technician training program described in subsection B. <a id=\"paragraph-243801\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#G\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"H\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">H.<\/span> A <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy intern<\/span> may perform the duties set forth for <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technicians<\/span> in subsection A when registered with the <span class=\"dictionary\">Board<\/span> for the purpose of gaining the practical experience required to apply for licensure as a <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacist<\/span>. <a id=\"paragraph-243802\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#H\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section id=\"I\"><p><span class=\"prefix-number\">I.<\/span> A registered nurse or licensed practical nurse practicing at an opioid treatment program pharmacy may perform the duties set forth for <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacy technicians<\/span> in subsection A, provided that all take-home medication doses are verified for accuracy by a <span class=\"dictionary\">pharmacist<\/span> prior to dispensing. <a id=\"paragraph-243803\" class=\"section-permalink\" href=\"https:\/\/vacode.org\/54.1-3321\/#I\"><i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/section>","plain_text":"                                 CODE OF VIRGINIA\n\nREGISTRATION OF PHARMACY TECHNICIANS (\u00a7 54.1-3321)\n\nA. No person shall perform the duties of a pharmacy technician without first\nbeing registered as a pharmacy technician with the Board. Upon being registered\nwith the Board as a pharmacy technician, the following tasks may be performed:\n\n   1. The entry of prescription information and drug history into a data system\n   or other record keeping system;\n\n   2. The preparation of prescription labels or patient information;\n\n   3. The removal of the drug to be dispensed from inventory;\n\n   4. The counting, measuring, or compounding of the drug to be dispensed;\n\n   5. The packaging and labeling of the drug to be dispensed and the repackaging\n   thereof;\n\n   6. The stocking or loading of automated dispensing devices or other devices\n   used in the dispensing process;\n\n   7. The acceptance of refill authorization of a prescription for a Schedule III\n   through Schedule VI drug and clarification of quantity or refills for a\n   prescription issued for a Schedule VI drug from a prescriber or his authorized\n   agent, so long as there is no other change to the original prescription;\n\n   8. The acceptance of an electronic transfer of a refill for a Schedule VI drug\n   upon order of the pharmacist-in-charge or pharmacist on duty if the refill is\n   not an on-hold prescription;\n\n   9. Under the supervision of a pharmacist, meaning the supervising pharmacist\n   is at the same physical location of the technician or pharmacy intern, and\n   consistent with the requirements of &#xA7; 54.1-3303.1, administration of the\n   following drugs and devices to persons three years of age or older as set\n   forth in regulations of the Board: vaccines included on the Immunization\n   Schedule published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and\n   vaccines for COVID-19; and\n\n   10. The performance of any other task restricted to pharmacy technicians by\n   the Board&#8217;s regulations.\n\nB. To be registered as a pharmacy technician, a person shall submit:\n\n   1. An application and fee specified in regulations of the Board;\n\n   2. Evidence that he has successfully completed a training program that is (i)\n   an accredited training program, including an accredited training program\n   operated through the Department of Education&#8217;s Career and Technical\n   Education program or approved by the Board; (ii) recognized by the Pharmacy\n   Technician Certification Board or the National Healthcareer Association; or\n   (iii) operated through a federal agency or branch of the military; and\n\n   3. Evidence that he has successfully passed a national certification\n   examination administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or the\n   National Healthcareer Association.\n\nC. The Board shall promulgate regulations establishing requirements for:\n\n   1. Issuance of a registration as a pharmacy technician to a person who, prior\n   to the effective date of such regulations, (i) successfully completed or was\n   enrolled in a Board-approved pharmacy technician training program or (ii)\n   passed a national certification examination required by the Board but did not\n   complete a Board-approved pharmacy technician training program;\n\n   2. Issuance of a registration as a pharmacy technician to a person who (i) has\n   previously practiced as a pharmacy technician in another U.S. jurisdiction and\n   (ii) has passed a national certification examination required by the Board;\n   and\n\n   3. Evidence of continued competency as a condition of renewal of a\n   registration as a pharmacy technician.\n\nD. The Board shall waive the initial registration fee for a pharmacy technician\napplicant who works as a pharmacy technician exclusively in a free clinic\npharmacy.
