						<section><p>Every sheriff shall maintain in his office all official receipt books showing receipt of any funds in his <span class="dictionary">custody</span> or that of the <span class="dictionary">court</span>, all cancelled checks showing payments from any such funds, and all statements of bank accounts in which funds of the sheriff&#x2019;s office are deposited. Such books, checks, receipt books and statements shall be maintained for a period of three years after they are audited by any individual or entity authorized by &#xA7;&#xA0;<a class="law" title="Sheriff to deposit funds, keep account of receipts and disbursements, keep books open for inspection" href="/15.2-1615/">15.2-1615</a> to inspect them and thereafter may be destroyed in accordance with retention regulations established pursuant to the Virginia Public Records Act (&#xA7;&#xA0;<a class="law" title="Legislative intent; title of chapter" href="/42.1-76/">42.1-76</a> et seq.).</p></section></text><history>1976, c. 468, &#xA7; 15.1-84.1; 1982, c. 493; 1993, c. 334; 1997, c. 587.</history><metadata></metadata></law>
