						<section><p>The department of police, if established in accordance with Chapter 17 (&#xA7;&#xA0;<a class="law" title="Preservation of peace and good order" href="/15.2-1700/">15.2-1700</a> et seq.), may include an animal protection police officer who shall have all of the powers of an animal control officer, as defined in &#xA7;&#xA0;<a class="law" title="Definitions" href="/3.2-6500/">3.2-6500</a>, conferred by general <span class="dictionary">law</span> and one or more deputy animal protection police officers to assist the animal protection police officer in the performance of his duties. An animal protection officer and his deputies also shall have all of the powers vested in <span class="dictionary">law</span>-enforcement officers, as defined in &#xA7;&#xA0;<a class="law" title="(Effective July 1, 2026) Definitions" href="/9.1-101/">9.1-101</a>, if they meet the minimum qualifications and have been certified under &#xA7;&#xA7;&#xA0;<a class="law" title="Minimum qualifications; waiver" href="/15.2-1705/">15.2-1705</a> and <a class="law" title="Certification through training required for all law-enforcement officers; waiver of requirements" href="/15.2-1706/">15.2-1706</a>.</p></section></text><history>2016, c. 498.</history><metadata></metadata></law>
