						<section><p>If a tenant or proprietor desires or if the local governing body sees cause, the local governing body shall appoint five disinterested resident <span class="dictionary">freeholders</span> of the county as <span class="dictionary">commissioners</span>, any three of whom may act to ascertain just compensation for the land to be taken for such <span class="dictionary">highway</span> or bridge and <span class="dictionary">damages</span>, if any, to the residue, beyond the benefits to be derived by such residue, from such <span class="dictionary">highway</span> or bridge.</p></section></text><history>Code 1950, &#xA7; 33-149; 1964, c. 565; 1970, c. 322, &#xA7; 33.1-236; 2014, c. 805.</history><metadata></metadata></law>
