§ 15.2-4202 Definitions

For the purposes of this chapter: “Commission” means a planning district commission. Planning district commissions are composed of the duly appointed representatives of the localities or Indian tribes which are parties to the charter agreement. “Indian tribe” means an Indian tribe or band that is recognized by federal law. “Planning district” means a contiguous area within the boundaries established by the Department of Housing and Community Development. “Population,” unless a different census is clearly set forth, means the number of inhabitants according to the United States census latest preceding the time at which any provision dependent upon population is being applied, or the time as of which it is being construed, unless there is available an annual estimate of population prepared by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service of the University of Virginia, which has been filed with the Department of Housing and Community Development, in which event the estimate shall govern.

History

This law was first created in 1968. The record of its establishment is cataloged in chapter 224 of that year’s edition of “Acts of Assembly,” the annual state publication listing all changes made to the Code of Virginia in that year. Unfortunately, the 1968 “Acts” aren’t available online. It has been modified 6 times. Those modifications are cataloged by “The Acts of Assembly,” a state publication, by year and chapter. Those modifications that can be read on the General Assembly’s website will be linked accordingly. Those modifications are as follows: in 1976, chapter 760; in 1986, chapter 164; in 1990, chapter 722; in 1995, chapters 732 and 796; in 1997, chapter 587; in 2017, chapter 377.
