Any person who holds a license or a multistate licensure privilege to practice professional nursing in Virginia shall have the right to use the title “registered nurse” and the abbreviation “R.N.” No other person shall assume such title or use such abbreviation or any other words, letters, signs or devices to indicate that the person using the same is a registered nurse.

History

This law was first created in 1970. The record of its establishment is cataloged in chapter 116 of that year’s edition of “Acts of Assembly,” the annual state publication listing all changes made to the Code of Virginia in that year. Unfortunately, the 1970 “Acts” aren’t available online. It has been modified 2 times. Those modifications are cataloged by “The Acts of Assembly,” a state publication, by year and chapter. Those modifications that can be read on the General Assembly’s website will be linked accordingly. Those modifications are as follows: in 1988, chapter 765; in 2004, chapter 49.

1970, c. 116, § 54-367.17; 1988, c. 765; 2004, c. 49.
